A trip to Old Sturbridge Village, the largest outdoor history museum in the Northeast, is a journey through time to a rural New England town of the 1830s. Visitors are invited into more than 40 original buildings, each carefully researched, restored, and brought to the museum site from towns throughout New England. These include homes, meeting houses, a district school, country store, bank, law office, printing office, carding mill, sawmill, gristmill, pottery, blacksmith shop, shoe shop, and cooper shop.
Established in 1896 by the Tuttle family, Breezlands Orchards is still owned and operated by the Tuttle family today. The orchard sits on over 100 acres with over 8000 fruit trees. New & old apple varieties are harvested over a two and a half month season. The high elevation combined with a deep rich soil produces a uniquely tasty fruit.
The Warren Farm & Sugarhouse specializes in the production of pure maple syrup, maple confections, and specialty food items made with maple syrup. Quabbin Reservoir is one of the largest man-made public water supplies in the United States. Created in the 1930's by the construction of two huge earthen dams, the reservoir is fed by the three branches of the Swift River, and seasonally by the Ware River. Four towns were flooded in the Swift River Valley. Construction of the reservoir remains a great engineering feat, and Quabbin is one of the largest unfiltered water supplies in the world. The reservoir is 18 miles long and has 181 miles of shoreline including 61 miles along the reservoir's 60 islands.
Glaciers created the rock shelter that gives the Reservation its name. Its large size and height and its southern exposure made the Rock House an excellent winter camp for Native Americans. More than three miles of trails take in spring-fed Carter Pond, the Rock House, and Balance Rock; a butterfly garden planted along a power line; stands of red pine and spruce planted in the 1930s and 1940s; and a steep hill that offers easterly views over rolling hills and westerly views of farmland.
Established in 1760, Ye Olde Tavern is the oldest continually operating inn in the United States. It has served guests in a warm and friendly atmosphere for over 240 years, and has seating available for 200 guests. Ye Olde Tavern specializes in business meetings, private parties, showers and weddings, but feel free to stop by the pub, which is open every day. Built in West Brookfield in 1760, it was a center of colonial life in Massachusetts. Here many men and lovely ladies of olden times were entertained, for the Tavern was located on the Olde Bay Path over which sped the stages from Boston to Albany.
